19 Dead, Many Injured In Mexico Highway Accident

Nineteen people lost their lives and six were injured after a bus crashed on a highway in Mexico’s central Zacatecas state on Saturday, local authorities reported.

The tragic incident happened in the early hours of the morning when the bus collided with a detached tractor-trailer loaded with corn.

Zacatecas Governor David Monreal initially reported 24 deaths, but the state attorney general’s office later revised the toll to 19 fatalities in a public statement.

Authorities stated that an investigation is underway to locate and detain the driver of the tractor-trailer. Recovery efforts continued into the morning as some of the victims’ bodies had fallen into a ravine, a local official told Reuters.

The bus was en route to Ciudad Juarez, near the U.S.-Mexico border in Chihuahua state. None of the victims were migrants, according to the attorney general’s office.
