Don’t Deride The North Over Insecurity Woes, Fani-Kayode Warns Southerners

Femi Fani-Kayode, a former minister of aviation, has admonished Nigerians of southern extraction to refrain from using the unrest and insecurity that betides the northern part of the country to ridicule and taunt the region.

Fani-Kayode issued the admonition in a post via his Twitter handle on Sunday

The flippant and controversial ex minister said anyone who gloats over the misfortune of the north over insecurity is ignorant and shortsighted.

He charge the south to rally behind and support the north in the effort to rid the region of perennial insecurity, noting that if the south continues to display indifference to the plight of the north and let the security challenges fester, the region too will soon be plagued by such devastating and overwhelming situation.

“Southerners that mock the north & laugh at the travails they are going through in the hands of terrorists are ignorant & shortsighted. The fire that is burning down your neighbour’s house will end up burning yours as well if you do not help him to put it out. Stop gloating!” the former minister wrote.

The North has become the hotbed of banditry and other criminal activities in recent times, a development that has gravely fragmented and corroded the fragile peace enjoyed in the region that has, for years on end, grappled with the horrors of insurgency.

Fani-Kayode comment comes after the recent attack on schools targeting schoolchildren

On Friday, gunmen had attacked Government Girls Secondary School, Jangebe in Talata-Mafara local government area of Zamfara, and abducted 317 students.

The girls are currently still being held captive.

Two weeks before the Jangebe attack, students, staff members and their relatives were kidnapped from Government Science College, Kagara, Niger state. They were, however, released on Saturday.
