A few hours ago, A 21-year-old man was sentenced to 10 years in a prison for raping a 5-year-old girl to death in Bayelsa State, Nigeria.
According to reports, the Bayelsa State High Court, sitting in Yenagoa had sentenced the young man who was identified as Timiondu Jephtath to 10 years in prison for raping the 5-year-old girl to death.
The accused was 16 years old at the time of committing the crime. He was said to have dumped the little girl’s lifeless body in an abandoned fishpond after raping her to death.
The case was handled by E. G. Omukoro (The presiding judge). This is what EKO HOT BLOG understood in his ruling in the suit numbered SHC/4C/2016 with a one count of murder brought against the accused by the state Ministry of Justice, Omukoro was quoted saying that “the prosecution failed to prove the accused had the intention to commit murder,” he said.
After much consideration of what he termed “plea of allocutus” and his youthful age, Justice Omukoro tempered justice with mercy saying the young man “could be redeemed and make amends by way of atonement for his action.”
He later ordered that Timiondu be detained at the Okaka Correctional Centre in Yenagoa for 10 years.
