1. Lagos Mainland stakeholders write Tinubu, Sanwo-Olu, GAC over marginalisation

Some elders and stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos Mainland (West) have petitioned the party’s National Leader,  Bola Tinubu, alleging marginalisation in political office allocations since the return to democracy in 1999.

A statement by the group titled, “Injustice, Oppression and Continuous Marginalisation of Ebute Metta (West) in the Political Affairs of Lagos Mainland Local Government,” was jointly signed by the Chairman and Secretary of Lagos Mainland West Elders Forum, Baba Babs Fashina and Akibu Bankole, respectively, and copied to the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olushola Sanwo-Olu and the Governance Advisory Council of the state.

The aggrieved elders and stakeholders noted that in the interest of justice, fairness, and equity, the House of Representatives, Lagos Mainland Federal Constituency position should be zoned to Ebute Metta (West).

2. Lagos explosion: Gas plant owner dies, lawyer insists on N800m compensation

Justice Oyindamola Ogala of the Lagos State High Court, on Monday, struck out the criminal charges against the owner of Fash Oil Limited, Alhaji Waidi Fashola, popularly known as Larafash, following his death.

The cause of the sudden death of the defendant is unknown.

The Lagos State Government had dragged Fashola to court following an explosion at his gas plant, Bestroof, on Cardoso Road, Baruwa Estate, Ipaja.

No fewer than eight people died in the explosion, which happened on October 8, 2020, on Baruwa Estate, in the Ipaja area of the state.

3. Hoodlums attack Oyo sports council chairman over N5m bet loss

The Oyo State Sports Council Chairman, Gbenga Adewusi, has been attacked by suspected hoodlums after a match between Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) and MFM Football Club at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan, Oyo State, ended in a stalemate.

The 3SC are 10th on the Nigerian Professional Football League table, while MFM are 20th on the log.

The game came to an end after the visiting MFM team equalised in the 92nd minute of the game after 3SC had earlier taken the lead in 42 minutes.

Adewusi told PUNCH Metro that he was attacked because fans of the Ibadan club thought that he sold the game.

4. GDP softens at 3.11%, non-oil sector remains growth driver

THE National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, has said that the nation’s economy as measured by the   Gross Domestic Product, GDP, grew   by 3.11%, year on year, YoY, in the first quarter of the year (Q1’22), from 0.51% recorded in the corresponding period in 2021 (Q1’21).

The Q1’22 growth rate was, however, 0.87 percentage points lower than the 3.98 per cent recorded in the previous Q4’21.

 

The growth in Q1’22 was driven by the Non Oil sector which expanded by 6.08 per cent YoY in Q1’22, as against the 26.04 per cent YoY contraction recorded by the Oil Sector in the same quarter.

In its   Nigerian Gross Domestic Product Report (Q1 2022) report released yesterday, NBS stated: “The Q1 2022 growth rate was higher than the 0.51% growth rate recorded in Q1 2021 by 2.60% points and lower than 3.98% recorded in Q4 2021 by 0.88% points.

5. APC stalwart calls for selection of Odey as Cross River Dep Gov in 2023

Mr Odi Omagu, an All Progressives Congress, APC, stalwart has called on the leadership of the party to select Senator Stephen Odey as the deputy governor of  Cross River State in 2023.

Making the call while speaking with newsmen in Calabar , Mr Omagu said victory in the gubernatorial and other elections by the party can only be easy and landslide when popular and credible candidates are flag bearers of the party.

“It is important that our great party gets it right on the choice of deputy governor. Senator Odey has massive votes coming from his Yache ward which effectively swung the tide in our favour during the House of Representatves by- election early this year and he also has appeal among the people going by his works in SUBEB for that reason he stands out among the lot.”

6. Two policemen killed, as gunmen ambush APC aspirant for Borno South

A frontline aspirant for Southern  Borno senatorial district on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Alhaji Idris Durkwa, on Sunday, escaped death when some unknown gunmen ambushed his convoy with his teaming supporters and opened fire along the Maiduguri -Damaturu road, leading to the death of two policemen with several others sustained various degrees of injuries.

Sources said the gunmen suspected that the senatorial aspirant was in the convoy which was heading from Damaturu to Maiduguri in the morning

Unfortunately, he was said to be in Maiduguri to receive his supporters at the time of the incident.

It was also gathered that the vehicle which he (Durkwa) usually rides was shattered with more than 12 bullets.

Reliable sources indicated that that, this attack is lending credence to the belief that some desperate individuals feel threatened by his aspiration to the senate seat.

7. APC primary: Buhari, aspirants, governors for high-level talks

Five days to its presidential primary, the All Progressives Congress (APC) is at a critical curve.

President Muhammadu Buhari will today meet with the presidential aspirants.

Governors, National Assembly leaders and party’s National Working Committee (NWC) members will also meet with the President.

8. Court dismisses governors’ suit against regulation of local govt spending

A Federal High Court (FHC) in Abuja yesterday threw out a suit by the 36 governors challenging the  Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU)  guidelines on the spending of the local governments’ funds.

The governors had in the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/563/2019 asked the court to stop NFIU from implementing the guidelines.

Named as defendants in the case filed by state Attorney-.Generals are the NFIU,  the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) and the . Attorney-General of the Federation.

Governor of Ekiti State, John Kayode Fayemi has admitted that he is ruling the State from the federal capital territory, Abuja.

There are concerns over some governors abandoning their States and moving to Abuja once they are elected into power. Some governors even travel abroad and spend years while their States suffer.

Ekiti is one of such States where the complaints about an absentee Chief executive has been resonating, with the citizens and members of the opposition expressing worries about Governor Fayemi relocating to Abuja

10. 2023: We will bomb terrorrists daily until they run away – Amaechi

Former Minister of Transportation and 2023 presidential aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC), Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has said that if he becomes president, he will ensure that terrorists and their hideouts are bombarded daily until they disappear into thin air.

Amaechi recalled how he tamed under six months the menace of militants and other criminal elements in the State when he was elected governor of Rivers State.

The former transport minister made the remark in Katsina on Monday, while canvassing for the support of delegates ahead of the forthcoming primaries to elect the APC flag-bearer for the office of the President come 2023.

Amechi said: “If you know Rivers State before I became the Governor, you will know there were serious cases of kidnappings and killings in the State that made oil companies move away, but in 6 months, I restored security.
