The Memory, Vigor, Glamour & Enchantment Of A Legend Who Passed On 49 Years Ago In Epe Division

The story of Chief Sabiu Olatunde Onasanya, of blessed memory, can be compared to that of a bonafide national titan who set the trend for a modern Lagos and western Nigeria in real estate in the 70s, a visionary stride that blazed the paths for generations after.

Mr Sabiu’s life is a testament to success, hard work, and unwavering focus; a life full of love for humanity that earned him a spot in the book of history.

Here comes the life, history, and chronology of a legendary philanthropist; and an Estate Controller in the 60’s/70’s in the Epe Division.

Today, the 26th of May, 2022 marks 49 years since my late and evergreen father departed this sinful world.

My father died on the 26th of May 1973 at the tender age of 39.

The Late Chief Sabiu Olatunde Onasanya was born into the family of Lasisi Agbomeji Onasanya and Madam Ayinke Onasanya in Igbodile quarters, Naforija, Epe, Lagos State.

He was married to Alhaja Adetoun Onasanya, née Lawal from Poka, and was blessed with Children before his demise in 1973.

The Wife, Alhaja Adetoun Onasanya, who is still alive and a successful textile merchant, was able to raise all the children after the demise of her beloved husband – a worthy mother indeed.

Late Chief Sabiu Olatunde Onasanya was one of the pioneers of modern Lagos. He was the Estate Controller for the then Western Nigeria Housing Corporation now Wemabod Estates and was instrumental in the Development of Ikeja Industrial estate and the ADENIYI Jones Housing scheme.

He was also involved in the development of the Dugbe industrial master plan in Ibadan, the then Western State now present day Oyo State.

Ogidigbo of Africa was one of the founders of the Ikeja Club. He became the Managing Director of the defunct African Housing Service before his demise on 26th May 1973 at the age of 39.

During his lifetime, a lot of Epe’s sons and daughters were employed in that industrial estate he helped established.

We also remember his siblings who have left this world. They are Mr Adewale Onasanya of blessed memory, who was known in Naforija as ‘the Guvnor’.

Late Chief Nojeem Adebola Onasanya( 1943-1994). Chief Adebola Onasanya was one of the pioneers of Agricultural financing in Nigeria. He started the Agricultural Credit Department of the then Barclays Bank, now Union Bank.
