1. Ekiti 2022: NSCDC launches toll-free line, moves to curb electoral violence
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has on Friday announced the launching of a toll-free number, a move it said was meant to attend to security breaches and curb electoral violence during the Ekiti State governorship election, slated for Saturday, June 18, 2022.
The civil defence also said it had “set up a situation room at the State Command Headquarters with support from the United States Agency for International Development, the UK Aid, Balm in Gilead Foundation for Sustainable Development, and the National Democratic Institute.
This was contained in a statement issued by the NSCDC’s Director of Public Relations, Abuja National Headquarters, DCC Olusola Odumosu, and made available to newsmen.
The statement partly read, “As part of deliberate strategies to ensure effective monitoring of security on June 18, governorship election in Ekiti State, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has set up a situation room at the State Command Headquarters with support from the USAID, UK AID, Balm in Gilead Foundation for Sustainable Development and the National Democratic Institute.
2. Ekiti 2022: NYSC DG seeks adequate security of corps members
The Director-General of the National Youths Service Corps, Brigadier General Muhammad Fadah, on Friday, canvassed adequate protection of corps members participating in the governorship election holding in Ekiti State on Saturday.
Fadah, who reiterated the importance of the scheme to the nation, appealed to the nation’s security agencies on election duty to strive to protect the youths serving their fatherland.
The NYSC DG, who spoke in Ado Ekiti during visits to the top brass of the Department of State Services, the Nigerian Army, and the police in the state, wondered what Nigeria would be without the NYSC in view of its services to the country and its unity factor.
Major-General GU Chibuisi, who received the NYSC DG and his entourage, reiterated the importance of the NYSC to the nation, saying, “The scheme opened the eyes of the Nigerian youths to the beauty of the country.
3. BREAKING: Gunmen attack Bauchi gov’s LGA, kill four
Gunmen suspected to be bandits on Thursday launched an attack on the Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi state and killed four people. Three others were injured.
The PUNCH reports that Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed hails from Alkaleri LGA.
Our correspondent gathered from local sources including vigilantes that when the suspected bandits attacked Tudun Wadan Jada formerly known as Jimari Jauro-Bano, to abduct residents, an alarm was raised.
The youths from the village and surrounding villages were said to immediately mobilise themselves and resisted them and they were unable to go with the abducted people.

4. Ekiti Poll: We’ll deal decisively with electoral offenders — Police
Ahead of the governorship election in Ekiti state, the Nigeria Police have vowed to deal with any electoral offenders during the conduct of the election.
The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Babatunde Johnson Kokumo, in charge of the Ekiti election, said this when he visited the Ekiti Resident Electoral Commissioner, Rec, Dr Adeniran Rahmon.
Kokumo said that a robust security arrangement has been put in place to ensure a transparent poll in the state.
According to him “the security arrangement was being carried out in collaboration with sisters security agencies.
He appealed to Ekiti residents to cooperate with security agencies in its efforts to prevent the incursion of criminal elements into the state.
5. 37m children displaced globally in 2021 – UNICEF
Conflict, violence and other crises left a record 36.5 million children displaced from their homes globally at the end of 2021, UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has said.
UNICEF, in a statement released on Friday, stated that the figure was the highest number recorded since the Second World War.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the figure includes: 13.7 million child-refugees and asylum-seekers, and nearly 22.8 million who were internally-displaced due to conflicts and violence.
However, not included are the children displaced by climate and environmental shocks or disasters as well as those newly-displaced in 2022, including by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
6. Ekiti Poll: Police impose restriction of movement, order withdrawal of officers attached to candidates
The police in Ekiti State have imposed restriction of movement in and out of the state from the hours of 11:59am on Friday.
Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the election, Babatunde Kokumo said in Ado Ekiti that the restriction of movement was to prevent incursion of criminal into the state.
Kokumo urged travellers and commuters hoping to move through the State to seek alternative route.
He said that “it would help security agencies prevent flow of illicit drugs and illegal arms into the state.

7. Eight Nigerians on INTERPOL’s wanted list
Interpol is the world’s largest international police organisation with 190 member- countries cooperating to prevent and solve crimes that cross borders.
If a criminal flees to another country to avoid prosecution, Interpol will issue a Red Notice alert to all police worldwide about the criminal who is wanted internationally. The Red Notice is a request to law enforcement agencies all over the world to find and apprehend the culprit.
8. Lassa fever deaths increase to 155 – NCDC
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has revealed that the death toll from Lassa fever has increased to 155 as of June 5, 2022.
The report stated that while three States – Ondo, Edo and Bauchi- accounted for 68 per cent of all confirmed cases, there have been 782 confirmed cases of the disease with 4,939 suspected cases.
The NCDC’s report further revealed that this year alone while a cumulative of 742 people were managed at treatment centres, 52 health workers have been affected by the disease.
As part of its efforts to control and curtail the spread of the disease, the NCDC stated that it has sent Lassa fever alert letters to States.

9. Climate change: Buhari lists measures as Nigeria scales down on emissions
President Muhammadu Buhari has restated Nigeria’s commitment for a safer and healthier global climate.
He said measures include the elimination of kerosene lighting by 2030, increase in use of buses for public transport and reduction in burning of crop residues.
Buhari spoke on Friday during a virtual meeting, hosted by United States President Joe Biden.
The party was the Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate Change (MEF).
10. Viral video: Uniformed men entering Lagos are army recruits – Police
The Lagos State Police Command has debunked claims of “Fulani boys in army uniform” making their way into the state.
The Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, reacted to the viral video Friday night.
The spokesman said the narrative behind the footage “is not only misleading but entirely baseless”.
“It is most unfortunate that this is coming from supposedly enlightened people who should know a thing or two about verification of wild claims before spreading the same.”
Hundeyin informed the public that the police authority in Lagos reached out to the Nigerian Army.
