EKO HOT BLOG reports that President Muhammadu Buhari has once again reassured Nigerians that he will not be going for a third term
President Buhari said this during a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister Boris Johnson of Great Britain (GB) on the sidelines of the 26th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Kigali, Rwanda, on Thursday.
Johnson had asked if Buhari would run for office again, to which the African leader responded: “Another term for me? No! The first person who tried it didn’t end very well (general laughter).”
Buhari ran for president of Nigeria in 2003, 2007, and 2011. In December 2014, he emerged as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress party for the 2015 general election.
Buhari won the election, defeating incumbent President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. This was the first time in the history of Nigeria that an incumbent president lost a general election. He was sworn in on 29 May 2015.
