The Port Harcourt Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Stanley Ogoun, in a statement in Port Harcourt, weekend, noted that the Federal Government’s alleged abandonment of draft renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement affirms the doubt regarding the Federal Government’s commitment to ending the current strike.
Ogoun said the union was forced into the present strike on February 14, 2022, based on the refusal of the FG to honour the terms of the agreement, Memorandum of Action, MoA, which led to the conditional suspension of the last strike in December 2020.
He stated that the terms of the 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement, renegotiation of the agreement has been due since 2012 (10 years ago), but that it took the union several years of concerted efforts to bring Federal Government to the renegotiation table in 2017 with Dr. Wale Babalakin as the leader of the Federal Government’s team.
Ogoun said the Federal Government was not interested in collective bargaining, adding that it was unfortunate and regrettable that the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, whose ineptitude led to and prolonged this avoidable strike could not take proactive steps to prevent the strike.
