Lagos Government Kicks Against Planned Exhumation Of School Student

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Lagos state government has condemned alleged plans to exhume the body of late Whitney Adeniran, a former student of Chrisland School who was electrocuted during her school’s inter-house sports event.

The deceased’s mother, Blessing Adeniran, took to her Instagram stories on Friday, March 3, to reveal that the authorities of Chrisland School had called the police and requested a fresh autopsy, which would require exhuming the body of her daughter. The young girl was laid to rest on March 2, 2023.

Reacting to the alleged plans, the Lagos state Ministry of Justice released a statement on Friday, March 4, stating that it would oppose any attempt to exhume Whitney’s body.

The statement reads:

“The Lagos State Ministry of Justice is aware of the current ongoing dialogue about the alleged plans to exhume the body of the late Whitney Omodesola Adeniran, a student of Chrisland Schools whose death as revealed by the autopsy, conducted by Lagos State University Teaching Hospital was as a result of asphyxia and electrocution. Whilst we have not received any such official communication requesting for exhumation, however, if and when we do receive such a request, we shall be opposed to it.”

Furthermore, the Ministry of Justice explained that the circumstances for exhumation under the Coroners’ Systems Law, 2015 do not arise in this case. The ministry also stated that they are working closely with the police, who have assured them that the duplicate case file would be forwarded on Monday, March 6, 2023, to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions to aid the speedy issuance of legal advice.

The mother of the deceased had earlier accused the school authorities of negligence and failure to take responsibility for her daughter’s death. She further alleged that the school had tried to cover up the incident by claiming that the cause of her daughter’s death was unknown.
