1. Ondo’s first female speaker gives birth at 54

The first female Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Mrs Jumoke Akindele-Ajulo, has delivered a baby.

She was said to have delivered the baby at the age of 54.

Akindele, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, who was in the Assembly between 2011 and 2019,  became speaker in 2014 and was removed in 2017.

She represented the Okitipupa State Constituency 1 in the Assembly.

2. Withdraw your petition against Tinubu, Nnamani tells Obi

Former Governor of Enugu State, Senator Chimaroke Nnamani, has asked the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, to withdraw his petition against the President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu and join him in the task of making a new nation.

Senator Nnamani urged Obi and his supporters to align with the ebullience and conviviality of welcoming Tinubu’s victory to the Office of the President of the greatest black nation on earth.
Obi had filed his petition to challenge the victory of Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress in the 25 February election.

Obi, who came third in the election, filed his petition to challenge the outcome of the poll at the Presidential Election Petition Court in Abuja where he alleged that the election was characterised by various irregularities including the non-qualification of the Tinubu and his running mate, Senator Kashim Shettima to contest the election.

Obi also stated that Tinubu failed to win the majority of the lawful votes cast in the election, and just as he could not secure one-quarter of the legal votes cast in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

3. Disregard NANS Sudan, stay indoors, embassy warns Nigerian students

The Embassy of Nigeria in Khartoum, Sudan has asked Nigerian students trapped in the country to disregard the National Association of Nigerian Students, who had asked them to converge for evacuation.

The PUNCH reports that NANS Sudan in a statement dated Sunday asked students trapped in the country to prepare for evacuation to Ethiopia.

This is a result of fighting between Sudan’s army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s forces and the rival Rapid Support Forces of his former deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, that has led to the death of hundreds and left many foreign nationals stranded.

The fighting began on April 15 over a dispute on the planned integration of the RSF into the regular army.

4. Kidnap: Police rescue victim, neutralise 1 suspect in Ebonyi

Police Command in Ebonyi on Sunday said it rescued a kidnapped victim and killed one suspect in the state.

SP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, Spokesperson of the Command, in a statement in Abakaliki, said the officers and men also arrested two suspected kidnappers and recovered three riffles.

According to the statement, “today being April 23, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Faleye Olaleye, received a distress call that a clergy had been kidnapped”.

“He immediately went into action by mobilising the tactical teams and the Divisional Police Officer of Ebonyi Division to cordon and barricade marked out areas.

5. 5 die, 6 survive in boat mishap in Kano

The Kano State Fire Service on Sunday confirmed five persons dead while six others survived a boat mishap at Kanwa Dam in Madobi Local Government Area of the state.

The service Public Relations Officer, Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in a telephone conversation in Kano that one Umar Faruk-Dalada, reported the incident, situation reports and where it occured.

He said: “The incident occurred on April 22, at about 05:40 p.m.

“There are 11 persons on the boat, six were rescued alive, while five were rescued in an unconscious state.

6. NDLEA nabs widower, divorcee with cocaine in Lagos

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a widower, Ariyibi Olaseinde and a divorcee, Silifat Tunrayo Akanbi, with cocaine at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, in Lagos.

The duo who were going for Lesser Hajj in Saudi Arabia were caught with 14.4kg cocaine hidden in lace and Ankara fabrics.

This was disclosed in a statement by the NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi on Sunday.

Ariyibi was intercepted on Thursday, April 20, at the screening point of the MMIA Terminal 2 during outward clearance of Qatar Airways passengers, travelling from Lagos via Doha to Medina, Saudi Arabia.
