reports that the United Kingdom has implemented a new law that restricts Nigerian students and other international students studying in the UK from bringing their family as dependents, except in specific circumstances.

This measure is part of the UK government’s efforts to reduce immigration numbers, which currently stand at approximately one million, according to Sky News.

The new rule removes the permission for international students to switch from the student route to work routes before completing their studies, aiming to prevent visa system abuse.

This online media platform also gathered that there will be a review of the maintenance requirement for students and dependents, along with a crackdown on unscrupulous education agents who exploit inappropriate applications for immigration purposes rather than education.

The changes will come into effect in January 2024, allowing students starting courses in the UK time to prepare for the new regulations.
