Eko Hot Blog reports that a Royal Navy warship, HMS Trent, arrived in Lagos, Nigeria on Sunday, on a mission to support ally countries and partners in curbing illegal activities including piracy and illicit trafficking in the Gulf of Guinea.
The warship, which arrived from Gibraltar, has an expert boarding team of UK Royal Marines and a Puma surveillance drone on board.

The visit is part of the UK’s commitment to supporting maritime security in the region. The UK has a long history of engagement in the Gulf of Guinea, and has provided training and support to the Nigerian Navy to help them counter piracy and other illegal activities.
The Commanding Officer of HMS Trent, Tim Langford, said the warship’s visit was a “demonstration of the UK’s commitment to working with Nigeria to improve maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea”.
He added that the Royal Navy was “committed to working with our Nigerian partners to build on the strong relationship that we already have”.
The UK Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, Jonny Baxter, said the visit was “a clear signal of the UK’s commitment to working with Nigeria to tackle shared international security challenges”.
He added that the UK and Nigeria “face many shared threats, and we are keen to work together to defeat these”.
The arrival of HMS Trent is a welcome boost to Nigeria’s efforts to counter piracy and other illegal activities in the Gulf of Guinea. The warship’s presence will help to deter criminals and will also provide a valuable training opportunity for the Nigerian Navy.
