EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Lagos State Government (LASG) has issued a stern warning to property owners within Shoreline Estate, Onikoyi Estate, Park View, and Banana Island in Ikoyi, mandating the removal of fences encroaching on vital drainage channels.
The ultimatum, set at seven days, urges compliance, failing which the government will take direct action against the violators.

Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab, overseeing the Environment and Water Resources, highlighted during a recent inspection that numerous buildings in the area have breached the standard 3-meter distance required from the drainage channels. In a gesture of compromise, the government is allowing a 2.5-meter space instead but stands firm that any structure failing to meet this requirement faces removal.
Wahab emphasized the voluntary nature of the compliance request, cautioning that failure to adhere could result in the government using taxpayer funds to enforce compliance, with the expenses incurred being billed back to the property owners.
Kunle Adeshina, Director of Public Affairs at the Lagos State Ministry of Environment, conveyed the commissioner’s stance through a statement, indicating, “On investigation, we found out that the first property situated along Onikoyi/Banana Island collector inside Onikoyi Estate left 2.5 meters for the drainage setback. To achieve balance, we will adopt this 2.5-meter setback, although it falls short of the legally required 3 meters.”
Wahab further specified a seven-day grace period for property owners and residents along the collector drain to readjust their fences, ensuring compliance with the 2.5-meter drainage setback. The statement highlighted that enforcement would commence promptly upon the expiration of this grace period.
