Eko Hot Blog reports in a move aimed at regulating burial and funeral practices, the Anambra State Government has instituted a ban on the public display of caskets for fabrication and sale within the state.

The law, recently passed by the state House of Assembly on Thursday, seeks to bring control and order to burial activities in Anambra.
As part of the new legislation, mortuary attendants are required to report any corpse that has exceeded one month from the date of deposit to the Ministry of Health.
Violation of this provision carries penalties, with individuals facing a fine of N100,000 or six months imprisonment, or both.
The law also mandates that all burial and funeral ceremonies for indigenous deceased persons in the state must be registered with the town union of the deceased. This measure is intended to streamline and monitor funeral proceedings.
Furthermore, the legislation explicitly prohibits the blocking of roads and streets during burial ceremonies, emphasizing that such activities can only occur with prior permission from the relevant Local Government Authority.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo expressed his appreciation for the legislation, hailing it as a progressive step.
In a concise message, Governor Soludo stated, “Anambra Burial Law is a very progressive law to remove the burden and pressure on the poor as well as liberate women from oppressive practices during burials. We celebrate ‘befitting living’ and only a decent funeral.”
