An eyewitness said the attackers disguised themselves as locals, buying food at shops before unleashing violence. A court worker said she narrowly avoided being attacked.

According to reports, the gunmen first stopped at a gas station in Iboko, killing two after filling up. They then proceeded to open fire on Ebubeagu operatives, killing member Fredrick Idike and another. Two more Ebubeagu members were severely wounded with an axe.

The eyewitness said: “Yesterday was Iboko Market and the ugly incident made the traders start running for safety. The whole market was deserted yesterday because of the incident.”

The attack caused panic and chaos in the busy marketplace area. Traders fled the scene as gunshots rang out.

Ebonyi State Police Command confirmed the attack and ensuing deaths. “Yes. It happened. Two lives were lost. But we are still investigating,” said police spokesperson Ukandu Joshua.
