Eko Hot Blog reports that the Lagos State Government (LASG) has swiftly responded to reports of massive fish mortality allegedly caused by dredging activities in Epe.
In a statement from the Office of Mineral Resources, under the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the state has launched an investigation and issued a stop-work order to all dredgers operating in the area.

According to the Special Adviser to the Governor on Mineral Resources, Engr. Abiola Olowu, the viral video circulating on social media platforms prompted immediate action. “The Ministry has issued a stop-work to all dredgers in the area, while a Solid Mineral investigative team, led by Geologist Emilio Cardoso, Director of Solid Mineral Department, has been deployed to the site to ascertain the veracity of the claims,” Olowu stated.
Geologist Cardoso acknowledged the unfortunate incident and stressed the need for a thorough investigation before drawing conclusions. “It is quite unfortunate that the reported incident of the death of the fish is true, even though we are very careful not to jump to quick conclusions over the cause of the incident without conducting a proper investigation and laboratory testing,” he said.
To maintain impartiality and protect the interests of all parties involved, Cardoso revealed that water, fish, and other necessary materials have been collected for testing. “We are not going to be biased in our findings, as we are empowered to ensure all Lagosians and their businesses are protected within the confines of the law,” he affirmed.
The Director emphasized that no party has been indicted at this early stage of the investigations, assuring the public that the right course of action will be taken based on the findings. “No individual will intentionally want to destroy another person’s business as a result of land operations. Hence, there may be a lot of unforeseen causes, which shall be unravelled by our findings,” Cardoso stated.
Expressing the state government’s commitment to resolving the issue, Cardoso added, “The Sanwo-Olu administration is on top of this case, and the public is assured that everything will be done to forestall any future occurrences.”
