Eko Hot Blog reports that as the curtain falls on the remarkable life of Olujimi Solanke, the renowned folk music legend, actor, and cultural icon, Nigeria prepares to bid farewell to one of its most celebrated artists.

At the age of 81, Solanke’s passing on February 5, 2024, marked the end of an era, but his legacy as a multitalented trailblazer in Nigerian arts and culture will forever be etched in the annals of history.

In recognition of his invaluable contributions, a week-long series of commemorative events has been planned, culminating in Solanke’s burial at a private cemetery in his native Ipara-Remo, Ogun State, on Friday, April 5th.

The funeral services will be held at the Methodist Church Nigeria, Ipara-Remo, as announced by his family.

Celebrated for his extensive works in music, dance, playwriting, acting, visual arts, and poetry, Solanke’s life was a testament to the power of storytelling and the preservation of African heritage.

His journey began in the United States, where he founded the drama group “The Africa Review,” dedicated to showcasing African culture through performances adorned in traditional Yoruba costumes.

Described as a “master storyteller” by CNN, Solanke’s reputation preceded him, earning him lead roles in many of Ola Balogun’s acclaimed films and a pivotal role in the film adaptation of Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka’s “Kongi’s Harvest.”

The week-long tribute will kick off with a Choral Concert at Ibudo Asa, Ipara Remo, on Monday, April 1st, followed by a night of homage at Freedom Park, Lagos, and candlelight processions at both Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, and Ipara-Remo, Ogun State.

Various groups, associations, and professional bodies have been designated April 1st–3rd to honor the late artist, with a Christian Wake scheduled at Methodist Church Nigeria, Ipara-Remo, on April 4th.

The burial program will also feature cultural and masquerade displays on Saturday, April 6th, celebrating Solanke’s life and works.
