INEC Clarifies Tenure Of FCT Council Chairmen

 

INEC clarifies that FCT council chairmen and councillors’ tenure will expire in June 2026 under the Electoral Act 2022, which stipulates a four-year term.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has clarified the legal position on the tenure of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) council chairmen. INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, explained during a meeting with the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Abuja that the current chairmen and councillors’ tenure would expire in June 2026.

Yakubu urged stakeholders to consider the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, which stipulates a four-year tenure for chairmen and councillors, replacing the three-year term outlined in the previous act.

This change was enacted by the National Assembly to align the tenure with executive and legislative elections nationwide.

He emphasized that tenure is determined by the date of the oath of office, not the election date, and highlighted the importance of stable, democratic processes in the FCT.

aYakubu assured that INEC would release the timetable and schedule of activities for the next Area Council elections in due course.
