JUST IN!!! Rivers Announces Date for LGA Elections

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has set October 5 for the local government elections.

Eko Hot Blog reports that the announcement comes amidst the ongoing local government succession crisis caused by the conflict between Governor Siminialayi Fubara and the Martins Amaewhule-led lawmakers.

The Governor had inaugurated caretaker committees to manage the local government areas, while the ousted chairmen continued to assert their claims to the seats following a six-month tenure extension granted by the lawmakers.

To prevent violent clashes, the police have taken control of all 23 local government area secretariats in the state, pending the forthcoming judgment of the Court of Appeal.
