Sir Keir Starmer becomes the UK’s new prime minister after Rishi Sunak’s resignation, following the worst election defeat for the Conservatives.

Eko Hot Blog reports that Sir Keir Starmer has officially become the UK’s new prime minister following a meeting with the King at Buckingham Palace. This significant event occurred after Rishi Sunak resigned, marking the Conservative Party’s worst ever general election defeat.

As the new prime minister, Sir Keir takes on the mantle of leadership as the first Labour prime minister in 14 years, and only the seventh in the history of the Labour Party.

Following their meeting, the King’s spokesman announced that His Majesty had formally requested Sir Keir to form a new administration, signaling the start of a new era in British politics.

“Sir Keir accepted His Majesty’s offer and kissed hands upon his appointment as prime minister and first lord of the Treasury,” he said.

Much of the country was turned red overnight, with Mr Sunak conceding defeat just before 5am on Friday and Sir Keir claiming victory shortly after.

Meanwhile, Rishi Sunak has announced his resignation as leader of the Conservative Party, acknowledging public anger and disappointment following Labour’s overwhelming victory in the general election. Speaking from 10 Downing Street, Mr. Sunak stated he would remain in his role until the Tory leadership race begins.
