NMA Appeals For Safe Return Of 20 Students Abducted By Bandits

The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has urged the federal government to secure the safe release of 20 medical students abducted by bandits in Benue State on Thursday.

The students were en route to Enugu for the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students (FECAMDS) conference when they were kidnapped around 5:00 pm.

The NMA confirmed that 12 of the victims are from the University of Jos, Plateau State, while 8 are from the University of Maiduguri, Borno State.

In a statement released on Saturday, Dr. Benjamin Egiso, Secretary-General of the NMA, called on Inspector General of Police Olukayode Egbetokun to mobilize all necessary resources for the students’ safe return.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the statement, which was also sent to Minister of Health Ali Pate and Minister of Education Tahir Mamman, detailed that the kidnapping occurred between Otukpo and Enugu in Benue State.

One of the abducted students managed to send their location via Google Maps from the Oglewu Ehaje area, accompanied by an abduction note confirming the incident.

The NMA has voiced deep concern for the students’ safety and stressed the urgency of the situation.

They have called for prompt and effective action from the Nigeria Police Force and are ready to assist in any way possible to support rescue efforts.

The NMA’s statement read:

“On behalf of the Nigerian Medical Association, I urgently bring to your attention the abduction of 20 medical students.
“These students were on their way to a FECAMDS conference in Enugu when they were kidnapped between Otukpo and Enugu on Thursday, August 15, 2024.

“One of the students sent their location via Google Maps, showing they were in the Oglewu Ehaje area.
