Trump Vows To Fire Special Counsel, Jack Smith If Re-Elected

Donald Trump stated on Thursday that, if re-elected, he would swiftly terminate special counsel Jack Smith, signaling his intent to halt the criminal cases Smith has brought against him.

With the presidential race against Kamala Harris entering its final days, Trump made these comments during an interview with conservative podcast host Hugh Hewitt.

When asked about potentially pardoning himself or dismissing the special counsel, Trump responded, “Oh, it’s so easy… I would fire him within two seconds.”

Smith, who charged Trump in Florida for retaining classified documents at Mar-a-Lago and in Washington for efforts to overturn the 2020 election, would be removed, Trump said, if he secures another term.

Trump also claimed he had immunity granted by the US Supreme Court, referencing a recent decision stating former presidents are immune from prosecution for actions taken in office.

Although firing the special counsel typically falls under the attorney general’s authority, Trump has hinted at appointing an attorney general who would ensure the justice department steps back from the pending cases against him.
