Handcuffing Dele Farotimi to Court Exposes Judicial Misconduct, Trust Issues – Ezekwesili

Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has condemned the use of handcuffs on human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi during his appearance at the Ekiti State High Court.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Farotimi’s arrest stemmed from a defamation lawsuit filed by Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Afe Babalola. The lawsuit alleged defamation in Farotimi’s book, Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System.

On Monday, Farotimi was escorted to court in handcuffs by the Nigeria Police Force, sparking outrage.

Reacting on X (formerly Twitter), Ezekwesili criticized the incident, describing it as a reason for citizens’ growing distrust in the judiciary. She questioned the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunde-Ojo, demanding an explanation for the handcuffing and immediate action to prevent a recurrence.

She wrote: “How did a civil matter between Dele Farotimi and Chief Babalola morph into an egregious display of injustice? Citizens now lack trust in our judiciary due to its perceived capture by Nigeria’s irresponsible political class.

Ezekwesili

“The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunde-Ojo, must explain the rationale behind this treatment of Citizen Farotimi and ensure it is corrected. This reckless violation of constitutional rights must stop.”

Ezekwesili further called for judicial processes to be followed appropriately, urging both parties to resolve their dispute through legal means without further assault on the rights of Nigerians.
