TCN Restores Power To Bayelsa After Four-Month Outage

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has successfully restored electricity to Bayelsa State following a four-month blackout caused by extensive vandalism of power infrastructure.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Port Harcourt Region oversees power transmission across Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Imo, and Rivers states.

Anyaegbulem revealed that the outage, which began on July 29, 2024, resulted from the vandalism of 20 transmission towers along the critical Ahoada-Yenagoa 132-kilovolt (KV) electricity line—the sole transmission line supplying power to Bayelsa State.

“The 132KV line is the only transmission line that supplies electricity to Bayelsa State. Repairs of the collapsed towers presented a significant challenge, with the blackout lasting until November 30, when we successfully restored the lines,” Anyaegbulem said.

The General Manager highlighted the financial strain caused by the damage, noting that constructing a single transmission tower costs approximately ₦13 million.

He also disclosed that police officers working with TCN arrested 10 individuals involved in vandalizing the company’s facilities during 2024. Of these suspects, four have already been convicted in court, while six remain in police custody awaiting further legal action.

Anyaegbulem reiterated TCN’s commitment to supplying electricity to Distribution Companies (DisCos) to ensure consistent power delivery to customers. He called for increased collaboration between stakeholders to safeguard critical power infrastructure from vandalism and criminal activities.
