Augustine University Dedicates Chapel of Mary Mother of the Church

Ekohotblog reports that Augustine University, Ilara-Epe, has reached a historic milestone with the dedication of its newly built Chapel of Mary Mother of the Church.

The grand ceremony, which drew Catholic faithful, dignitaries, and well-wishers, marked a another chapter in the University’s mission to provide holistic education that nurtures the intellectual, physical, and spiritual well-being of its community.

The dedication Mass, presided over by His Grace, Most Rev. Dr. Alfred Adewale Martins, Archbishop of the Metropolitan See of Lagos and Proprietor of Augustine University, was a solemn and joyous celebration.

Grace, Most Rev. Dr. Ignatius Ayau Kaigama, Archbishop of Abuja Catholic Archdiocese, and Most Rev. Dr. Francis Obafemi Adesina, Bishop of Ijebu-Ode Catholic Diocese, along with over 100 priests.

In his homily, Archbishop Martins emphasized the spiritual mission of the Chapel, stating,

“This Chapel is more than a building; it is a sacred space where faith will be deepened, and hearts will encounter God.

It stands as a testament to the commitment of Augustine University to spiritual growth.”

The event featured sacred rites, including the anointing of the altar and walls of the church, as well as the incensation of the entire chapel, symbolizing its consecration as a place of worship and reflection.

A highlight of the ceremony was the announcement of Rev. Fr. Andrew Toye as the new Chaplain of the Chapel, succeeding Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Ogundele, who served the University community with dedication since its inception.

Expressing gratitude for their contribution, Dame Winifred Akpani, who, alongside her husband, Sir Walter Akpani, donated the Chapel, remarked,

“It is an honor to serve God and contribute to the spiritual lives of this community.

Our prayer is that this Chapel becomes a place where generations encounter the peace and grace of God.”

Their generosity also extended to the construction of a Priest House and the provision of generators to ensure uninterrupted power supply to both facilities.

The Chapel, designed by renowned Italian architect Teresa Mallamaci, is an architectural masterpiece blending Christological and Mariological motifs.

With a seating capacity of 1,200, it includes two side Chapels – one for Eucharistic Adoration and another for weekday Masses.

Dame Doja Otedola, Mother of the University’s Chancellor, and His Eminence Anthony Cardinal Okogie, Visioner of Augustine University and Archbishop Emeritus of Lagos, were among the dignitaries present.

HRM Oba (Dr.) Olufolarin Olukayode Ogunsanwo, the Alara of Ilara Kingdom, also graced the occasion with his representatives.

Reflecting on the Chapel’s significance, Dame Doja Otedola noted,

“This Chapel is not just a place of worship; it is a legacy of faith, art, and community.”

The Chapel foundation was laid in 2019, and its completion marks a pivotal moment for the University. Archbishop Kaigama lauded the initiative, stating,

“This Chapel is a light in our society, reminding us of the importance of anchoring our lives in faith.”

The ceremony concluded with a vibrant reception where guests celebrated the University’s achievement, symbolizing unity and gratitude.
