Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has pledged to fulfill the bail conditions set for human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi.

Farotimi, involved in an alleged defamation case against legal icon Afe Babalola, was granted bail by the Ekiti Magistrate Court on Friday.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the bail conditions include a ₦30 million bond, two sureties (one of whom must be a property owner), the surrender of Farotimi’s passport, and a restriction from granting any media interviews.

Obi’s decision to meet Farotimi’s bail conditions was conveyed by Tanko Yunusa, the former spokesman for Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign. Yunusa shared the update in a brief statement on his X handle on Friday.

He explained that Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, sought to resolve the situation in a way that would serve the best interests of all parties involved. Yunusa stated, “I consulted His Excellency, Peter Obi, as the leader of the Obidient Movement. As a respecter of the rule of law, due process, and order, he offered to take on the bail conditions for Dele Farotimi.”

Yunusa further noted that Obi expressed gratitude to the courts and all parties involved, emphasizing that his primary concern was to ensure a resolution that would benefit both the legal system and all those affected by the matter.
