Gov Adeleke Frees Convict Sentenced to Death for Stealing Fowl in Ogun

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has granted a pardon to Segun Olowookere, who was sentenced to death for alleged involvement in stealing a fowl.

The case of Segun, who was 17 at the time of his arrest in November 2010, gained widespread attention after his mother made an emotional plea on a podcast hosted by Nollywood actress Biola Adebayo. Her appeal triggered a wave of public sympathy and social media advocacy, prompting the governor to intervene.

Olowookere was convicted alongside others by an Osun State High Court on December 17, 2014, for conspiracy to commit armed robbery, robbery, and stealing.

In a statement issued on Thursday by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke announced the pardon of Segun and 52 other inmates, including Sunday Morakinyo, who was also convicted of similar offenses.

The governor’s decision followed the recommendations of the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy. Exercising his constitutional powers under Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), Adeleke extended clemency to the convicts, citing their good conduct while in custody.

“Convicts recommended for outright pardon for good conduct (capital offences) are: Sunday Morakinyo, Segun Olowookere, Tunde Olapade, and Demola Odeyemi,” the statement noted.

The move underscores the governor’s commitment to justice tempered with mercy, particularly in cases involving young offenders and rehabilitated individuals.
