The Federal Government has hailed the conviction of separatist agitator and self-acclaimed Prime Minister of Biafra, Simon Ekpa, by a Finnish court, describing the ruling as a validation of its stance that he played a major role in terrorism-related crimes against Nigerians, particularly in the South-East.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a statement issued on Monday, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), said the judgment confirmed Nigeria’s long-held position that Ekpa used his platform to instigate violence and terror across the country.

“We receive the good news of the conviction of the leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra, Simon Ekpa, by the Finnish court,” Fagbemi said. “His conviction for terrorism and other related offences filed against him by the Finnish government is a confirmation that Ekpa had influenced and committed heinous crimes against the Nigerian people, especially in the South-East.”

The minister noted that Nigeria would take further steps on the matter once the full text of the judgment is received and carefully reviewed.

“Appropriate further actions would be taken upon receipt and understudying a copy of the judgement of the court,” he added.

Fagbemi also commended the Finnish government for its cooperation in the fight against insecurity, describing the conviction as a positive step towards strengthening bilateral relations.

“We commend the Finnish authorities for supporting Nigeria in the fight against insecurity and see this as a signal of future collaboration,” he said.
