According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Ibeju-Lekki Unit Command, the crash was caused by speeding, route violation, and dangerous driving.
The truck was reportedly driving against traffic when it collided head-on with the passenger bus coming from CMS and heading towards Epe.
Out of the 19 passengers involved, six were confirmed dead, including two males, three females, and a male child.
Nine others sustained varying degrees of injuries, while four passengers escaped unhurt.
The injured were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Epe and Hammond Hospital, while the deceased were deposited at the FMC Epe mortuary.
Rescue efforts were carried out by FRSC Zebra 46 and Corridor Command 13, officers of the Nigeria Police Force Akodo Division, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC).
Unit Commander of RS2.111 Ibeju-Lekki, ACC A.A. Abayomi, who led the operation, condemned the incident, stressing that reckless driving and disobedience to traffic regulations continue to endanger lives on the busy highway.
He appealed to motorists to drive responsibly and avoid the temptation of taking one-way routes.
An eyewitness, Mr. Olumide, who was at the scene, described the crash as horrifying.
“I saw the truck coming on one-way at top speed.
The bus driver tried to swerve, but it was too late. The sound of the impact was so loud, people ran out from nearby shops. It was heartbreaking seeing children and women pulled out lifeless.”
Another resident, Mrs. Funmilayo Adebayo, called for stricter enforcement of traffic laws along the corridor.
“This is not the first time trucks are driving against traffic here. Government needs to put permanent barriers and increase patrols. Too many innocent lives have been lost on this road.”
Community leaders in Ibeju-Lekki also expressed concern over recurring accidents on the Lekki-Epe Expressway, urging both the state government and law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts in curbing reckless driving and ensuring compliance with road safety regulations.
