The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa has announced the full transition of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) to Computer-Based Testing (CBT), signaling a major shift in Nigeria’s education system and how students will be assessed going forward.

Eko Hot Blog reports that the minister while speaking in Abuja, described the move as a landmark reform aimed at strengthening examination integrity, curbing malpractice, and bringing Nigeria’s assessment standards in line with global best practices.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), which conducts WASSCE, has implemented several digital innovations in recent years including e-learning platforms, digital certificates, and examiner marking tools, but the shift to CBT is the most significant modernization effort yet.

This development comes under the framework of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which is driving reforms across all levels of education.

From curriculum restructuring to infrastructure upgrades in schools and institutions, the administration is pursuing a future-focused approach to education and skills development.

While the government views the transition as a way to better equip Nigerian students for a technology-driven economy, the success of the rollout will depend on access to digital infrastructure, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

The Ministry of Education says it is committed to working with schools to ensure all students are prepared for the new system.
