The Governor, represented by the First Lady, Dr Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, explained that the programme aligns with the state’s vision of building an inclusive economy where residents can attain self-reliance and financial stability.

According to him, “This initiative is a clear demonstration of our government’s drive to reduce poverty through skills acquisition. By empowering women and young people, we are fostering sustainable livelihoods and laying the foundation for a more prosperous Lagos.”

He praised the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) for leading the initiative, describing it as a strategic project that equips participants with entrepreneurial skills, start-up kits, and mentorship to succeed in today’s competitive economy.

In her remarks, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon Bolaji Cecilia Dada, highlighted that the programme was designed to reduce unemployment, support families, and strengthen community resilience. “What we are seeing today is the practical result of a vision that empowers citizens to take control of their future.

The government remains committed to expanding this programme so more Lagosians can benefit,” she said.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Mrs Rianat Ajibike Onigbanjo, who gave the vote of thanks, appreciated Governor Sanwo-Olu for his consistent support of the ministry’s empowerment efforts.

She also commended facilitators, beneficiaries, and partners for their contributions, urging participants to use their new skills productively and serve as ambassadors of self-reliance.

Over the years, the Micro Enterprise Support Initiative has benefitted thousands of graduates from WAPA skills acquisition centres, with 70 percent of them making up the beneficiaries.

They have been trained in areas such as fashion design, catering, carpentry, ICT, and household essentials production, and provided with both technical expertise and start-up resources.

Through MESI, the Lagos State Government has once again demonstrated its determination to confront poverty through empowerment, innovation, and the creation of opportunities across all 57 local government areas and local council development areas in the state.
