EKO HOT BLOG reports that a pro-democracy group known as Think-Tank for Democracy has advised Nigeria’s President-elect, Bola Tinubu, to focus on policies that will address the country’s long-standing issues. The group made this call during a press conference held in Ikeja, Lagos on Wednesday.

In a statement signed by the group’s Chairman, Prof. Lucky Akaruese, and Secretary, Prof. Sylvester Akhaine, the group highlighted the many problems currently plaguing the country, including poverty, unemployment, insecurity, separatist agitation, debt overhang, corruption, poor infrastructure, and a skewed power distribution that stems from the 1999 Constitution.

The statement also noted the polity’s division and the need for healing.

The group urged Tinubu to tackle these problems, emphasizing the need for the support of every Nigerian and the importance of honesty of purpose. They also called for the best and brightest in the country to be assembled to address these issues, beyond an assemblage of party partisans.

The group also commented on the recently concluded 2023 general elections, stating that Nigeria is a country with many nationalities and linguistically diverse peoples.

Tremendous Work Ahead Of You, Sir -- Group To Tinubu

They advised against the over-dramatisation of identity politics of the ethnic hue, which they believe could lead the country down the road to Kigali. The group stressed that there are distinct class questions such as poverty, which have no ethnic boundaries, and urged that ethnic politics should be avoided as much as possible due to its toxicity and inclination towards violence.

The group also acknowledged some positive developments in the election process, despite their discontent with the process, including the magic of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System. The system was said to have negated every act of over-voting, moderated the inclination towards over-voting, and outright manufacture of election results.
