Interim boss Ralf Ragnick is set to make the move upstairs in the summer and knows Hasenhuttl well from their time working together at RB Leipzig.

Now, Hasenhuttl’s name has reportedly been added to United’s managerial shortlist.

Two Premier League draws against champions Manchester City made the United decision makers, who include football director John Murtough and technical director Darren Fletcher, take notice of Hasenhuttl’s work.

However, the 54-year-old faces competition for the job with former Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino and Ajax’s Erik ten Hag being the front runners.

But should the United hierarchy fail to land either, they would be open to switching to pursuing Hassenhuttl.

Like Pochettino, Hassenhuttl has cut his Premier League managerial teeth at St Marys and he would be open to a move to a bigger club.
