  • However, Mahmud Yakubu maintains his innocence regarding the allegations and has threatened a lawsuit requesting a prove to the claims.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Senator Dino Melaye, the spokesman for the Atiku-Okowa Presidential Campaign Council, has called for the resignation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmud Yakubu. Melaye made the call via his Twitter handle on Saturday.

This call comes after the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) called on the police and the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate the INEC boss over alleged manipulation of election results. In response, Yakubu threatened to file a lawsuit against the PDP, urging them to prove their claims in the court of law.

However, Melaye has insisted that Yakubu must go, alleging that he “superintended over a criminal enterprise yahoo yahoo INEC.” He accused Yakubu of engaging in criminal audacity and impunity, which he says bastardizes the rule of law and diminishes Yakubu’s credibility as a referee who scored a goal in a match.

The PDP had earlier stated that their call for an investigation was based on widely condemned infractions, brazen violation of the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022, and criminal manipulation and alteration of election results. The party had accused INEC of rigging the 2023 presidential election in favor of the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC).

Yakubu’s Press Secretary, Rotimi Oyekanmi, had responded to the PDP’s allegations, saying that INEC does not rig elections and wondered why the party had no evidence to back its claims.

The call for Yakubu’s resignation by Melaye is expected to generate mixed reactions from the public and political circles, especially as the country prepares for the 2023 general elections. It is unclear whether the INEC chairman will accede to the call or not.
