Nigerian politician and businessman, Orji Uzo Kalu has expressed interest in making a big investment in Premier League sleeping giants, Arsenal, in a bid to restore the club to former glories.
Goal reports that the two-term Governor of Abia State, Orji Kalu is said to be ready to buy a 35 per cent stake in Arsenal.
Kalu, who is a serving Nigerian senator in the National Assembly, is aiming to help the Gunners end their 16-year wait for the Premier League with his investments.
The ex-governor cited the success of local outfit, Enyimba, during the early 2000s as valid credential to validate his previous successful investments in football.
“Our success with Enyimba FC between 2000-07 has continuously increased my passion for football,” Kalu said.
“As the pillar of sports in Africa, I am considering an investment in football and I will buy 35 per cent stake in Arsenal FC.
“Our target is to lift the Champions League and EPL, and valuable investment as well.
“Doing what you love and loving it is where greatness lies. I need 35 per cent of Arsenal to bring back trophies.”
Meanwhile, former Super Eagles captain and veteran goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama has criticized Kalu’s desire to invest in the Premier League club.
Enyeama, who was a part of Enyimba’s glory days in the early 2000s under the patronage of Kalu feels the senator should rather look within and seek to restore the Aba based side to its days of local and continental dominance.
“Why not invest that money in Enyimba and turn it into a mega-club,” Enyeama tweeted.
“A club that will bring in a lot of sponsors and create job opportunities for the youth. Nigeria has no mega-club side that we can boast of.”
