Resident doctors in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have started a seven-day warning strike to protest severe problems in the FCT’s health sector.
In a statement from their President, George Ebong, the Association of Resident Doctors in the FCT declared the health system is paralyzed by long-standing issues, urging immediate and comprehensive reforms.
According to Eko Hot Blog, Ebong noted that resident doctors are under extreme pressure, often managing multiple departments simultaneously. He urged the government to address these challenges quickly, warning that continued neglect could cause the entire system to collapse.

The association demanded that the government resolve several key issues: fix manpower shortages, repair non-functional equipment, and address unpaid allowances and poor working conditions.

They also highlighted problems with unpaid salaries, delayed promotions, and underpaid staff, emphasizing that reforms are essential for improving morale and service delivery. Additionally, the doctors insisted that health workers must have a voice in decision-making.
The association had given the FCT administration a one-week ultimatum to begin meaningful reforms, particularly concerning staffing and welfare, before taking strike action.

Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Health, Iziaq Salako, expressed hope on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily that ongoing talks with the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) would prevent a full-blown strike. Salako said progress was being made, citing a recent meeting.
He explained that the main issue revolves around unpaid residency training allowances, with about 40% of the 2025 allocation still outstanding.
When asked if the government could guarantee a resolution before the ultimatum expired, Salako replied that it was his hope and goal.
