Legendary Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani, who passed away at the age of 91 last Thursday, will be buried on Monday in a private family ceremony in a quiet village near Milan, local officials have confirmed.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that thousands of mourners visited his casket over the weekend as it lay in repose outside the headquarters of the Armani fashion empire in central Milan.

According to the Castles Association of the Emilia-Romagna region, the designer will be interred in the medieval village of Rivalta, located south of Milan the same place where his late mother was buried.

In a statement shared via social media, the association noted that security will be in place to protect the privacy of the burial, which is expected to take place in the mid-afternoon.

The Mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, has also declared Monday a day of mourning, in honour of the late designer’s enduring legacy and deep ties to the city.

In a show of respect, Armani’s stores across Italy will close on Monday afternoon, the company confirmed to AFP.

Since news of his death, tributes have poured in from all over the world, including messages from top Hollywood celebrities, global political figures, and sporting icons — a reflection of Armani’s influence far beyond the runway.
