Indian PM Modi To Visit Nigeria At Tinubu’s Invitation

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Nigeria on Saturday, marking the first visit by an Indian leader to the country in 17 years.

Invited by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Prime Minister Modi’s visit is set to reinforce the strategic partnership between India and Nigeria, with a focus on expanding cooperation in energy, defense, and economic sectors.

Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Shri G. Balasubramanian, highlighted that India and Nigeria’s partnership, established formally in 2007, has fostered a growing economic alliance, with over 200 Indian companies investing more than $27 billion across various Nigerian industries.

India has long prioritized Nigeria within its West African engagement strategy, and this visit underscores the country’s commitment to deepening ties with Africa.

During a recent briefing, Periasamy Kumaran, India’s Special Secretary for Economic Relations and Development Partners Administration, emphasized India’s support for the Global South, representing 85% of the world’s population, and cited a trade volume with Africa reaching $100 billion and cumulative investments exceeding $75 billion.

He highlighted India’s focus on people-centered development partnerships tailored to specific needs and expressed India’s intent to share its expertise across key developmental areas.
