Kano Govt Imposes Dawn-To-Dusk Curfew Over Election Tension

  • The electoral commission declared Abba Yusuf the winner of the Kano governorship election on Monday.

  • Before the declaration, there were fears of electoral violence.

  • The Kano government imposed a curfew to forestall breakdown of law and order.

Eko Hot Blog reports that the Kano state government has imposed dawn to dusk curfew on residents.

In a statement issued Monday morning, Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Malam Muhammad Garba, said the move was aimed at avoiding breakdown of law and order following tensions generated from the collation of results of the governorship and state Assembly elections.

He also stated that the decision was to prevent hoodlums from causing chaos in the already tense situation.

The commissioner, therefore, called on people in the state to remain indoors as security agents would not spare anyone or group bent on causing trouble.

Kano State Governor-elect Abba Kabir Yusuf

The statement came minutes before the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) gubernatorial candidate, Abba Kabir Yusuf, the winner of last Saturday election in Kano.

Yusuf defeated his close rival, the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate and deputy governor of the state, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, by a margin of over 100,000 votes.
