1. May 29: Kano sets up 17-member transition committee

The Kano State Executive Council has approved the formation of a 17-member Transition Committee for the handing over of baton to the incoming administration.

This was revealed by the state Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Mallam Muhammad Garba.

The EC also approved a 100-member sub-committee to be drawn from various ministries, departments and agencies.

Garba was giving journalists outcome of the weekly meeting which held at Council Chamber, Government House, Kano.

2. A true leader must sacrifice for his people – Kaigama

The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, His Grace Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, on Sunday, said a true leaders must sacrifice for his people.

This is as he warned Nigerians politicians against living flamboyant lifestyles but modesty and service to humanity.

The cleric premised the lifestyles on the lucrative political offices in Nigeria, saying they absorb a very huge chunk of the national revenue.

He also made an allusion to the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem riding on a donkey which, according to him, is a symbol of peace and humility.

3. How bandits abducted two female students in Zamfara – Police

Bandits have abducted two female students of the Federal University, Gusau, at Sabon Gida village of Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

The Zamfara State Police Command confirmed that the students were abducted in the early hours of Sunday.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Mohammed Shehu, in a statement, explained that the bandits stormed the students’ rented hostel around 1am on Sunday.

The Commissioner of Police of the state, CP Kolo Yusuf, according to the statement, assured the general public, especially families of the victims and the management of the university that efforts were ongoing to rescue the students.

4. Benue PDP to APC: Nominate transition committee members, stop undermining Ortom

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, have asked the Benue state Governor-elect, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia and his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, to nominate persons to serve on the transition committee set up by the state government to help them engage meaningfully in activities of the outgoing government.

The State Publicity Secretary of the party, Bemgba Iortyom made the call in a statement issued weekend in Makurdi while lamenting the actions of the APC which he claimed were aimed at undermining the PDP led government in the state.

The Publicity Secretary in the statement alleged that the APC and the Governor-elect were on a mission to sabotage the government from within before the scheduled May 29 handover date.

5. Lagos PDP elders warn Jandor against denigrating Bode George

Elders of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Lagos State, including former Deputy Governor of the state, Senator Kofoworaola Bucknor-Akerele; a former acting National Secretary of the PDP, Chief Remi Akitoye and Mrs Onikepo Oshodi, on Sunday, warned the National leadership against interfering in the process of choosing party managers and candidates for the party in Lagos.

The elder also warned the PDP’s governorship candidate, Mr Olajide Adediran, popularly called Jandor, to desist from further denigrating leaders and elders of the party, just as they passed a unanimous vote of confidence on Chief Olabode George.

The elders, in a communique issued at the end of its meeting last week, warned the party’s governorship candidate to conduct himself in conformity with the cultures and norms of the party.

6. Palm Sunday: Embrace life of modesty, service – Kaigama urges leaders

THE Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, His Grace Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, has urged political office holders to embrace the life of modesty and service rather than flamboyance.

Kaigama made this call on Sunday in his homily during the Palm Sunday mass at Our Lady Queen of Nigeria Pro-Cathedral, Abuja.

Alluding to Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem riding on a donkey which, according to him, is a symbol of peace and humility, the Catholic cleric, said: “This is a challenge to political office holders to embrace a life of modesty, a life of detachment and service rather than luxurious and flamboyant lifestyles, oblivious to the suffering of the poor.

7. Oba of Benin suspends Enogie of Evbuobanosa Dukedom Akenzua

The Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, has approved the suspension from duty of Enogie (Duke) of Evbuobanosa Dukedom in Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State, Prof. Gregory Akenzua, for allegedly leading rebellion against the first-class monarch.

Enogie’s suspension, according to the king’s Chief Press Secretary, Iguobaro Osaigbovo, arose from many complaints and protests against him by elders across the six communities in Evbuobanosa Dukedom, comprising Evbuobanosa, Abudu, Igue-Ohenza, Idu-dolor, Iru and Evbuohen, to Oba’s palace in Benin, Edo State.

The elders indicted Akenzua for colluding with the suspended Enogie of Egbaen-Siluko Dukedom, Edomwonyi Iduozee Ogiegbaen, misconduct, failure to perform his duties and allegedly leading organised revolt against the Benin throne.

8. Southeast Bishops decry Enugu Gov result

The Southeastern zone of the Network Evangelical Bishops of Nigeria (NEBN) has rejected the result of the Enugu governorship election held on March 18, calling it an unacceptable assault on the people.

In a statement after a two-day meeting in Umuahia, Abia State by Bishop Samuel Ani, the NEBN president, and Bishop Emeka Nwafor, the publicity secretary, the bishops said that the Labour Party (LP) candidate, Chijioke Edeoga, a lawyer, journalist and former member of the House of Representatives, “won the election fair and square”.

The bishops stated that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja was clever by half by thinking that the public would consider it evenhanded if it “awarded Abia to the Labour Party and Enugu to the PDP when it looked into grave reports by different parties that the ruling PDP in Abia and Enugu states had inflated votes in some LGAs on an industrial scale”.
