1. IBB University expels 23 students

Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Niger state has expelled 23 students from the Institution over two major offences.

While 17 of the students were advised to withdraw from the Institution due to low academic performance, seven were withdrawn for various misconducts.

Vice Chancellor of the Institution, Professor Abu Kasim Adamu disclosed this while addressing Journalists in Minna yesterday ahead of the 4th combined Convocation of the University scheduled to hold on Saturday

Adamu noted that because the Institution is reputable for its high academic standards, the management will continue to uphold it.

2. Peacekeeping: Army dismisses corruption report as smear campaign

The Nigeria Army has condemned in totality a corruption report on the procedure for selection of competent troops for peace support operations by an online news platform (Not The PUNCH).

The report, captioned “Military Officers Raise Alarm Over Corruption, Ethnic And Religious Bigots in Nigerian Army, Warn Of Dangers” which was published on May 14, 2023 described the military as “promoting grave injustice and unprofessionalism to destroy Nigeria”, PUNCH reports.

However, the Director, Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, has condemned the report in a statement on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, refuting the allegations made, describing them as “mischievous and systematic smear campaign” targeted at “inciting troops”, “heating up the polity” and “destabilising the country.”

The statement read; “The Nigerian Army has noted with dismay, a mischievous and systematic smear campaign by Sahara Reporters, aimed at inciting troops, heating up the polity and destabilising the country through spurious, baseless and false alarm on corruption, nepotism, ethnic and religious bigotry within the Nigerian Army (NA).

3. Motorcycle, car in Umahi’s convoy crash, kill three

Three natives of Ezza South Local Government Area have been confirmed dead after the convoy of David Umahi, Ebonyi State Governor, crashed into their motorcycleIt has been reported that the casualties were struck by an advance team while they were on the route leading to Muhammadu Buhari’s international airport.

It was reported that they had dropped the state governor at the airport located at Onueke, and while returning to town, the tragic incident occurred.

According to reports, the incident happened soon after the opening of a flyover named after Prince Arthur Eze at Abaomege in the local government area of Onicha.

Prince Arthur Eze, together with Governor Umahi, commissioned the flyover.

4. Invest in girl-child digital literacy to curb unemployment, Minister tells Tinubu

MINISTER of Women Affairs, Pauline Tallen, including a Non-Governmental Organization, Odyssey Education Foundation, OEF, have urged the president-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to prioritize digital literacy and entrepreneurship for the girl child, as part of efforts geared towards reducing the high unemployment rate in Nigeria.

Speaking at a pitch event on technology and entrepreneurship for schools, Tuesday, Tallen, while reiterating the importance of digital technology in the era of globalization, bemoaned the low rate of participation of Nigerian women in tech related areas.

For instance, she said that in cloud computing only 12 per cent of professionals are women, and in engineering, only 26 per cent as captured by Economic Forum Global Gender Gap Report 2020.

5. Amotekun arrests 2 teenagers over alleged motorcycle theft in Osun

Osun State Security Network, Amotekun Corps, on Tuesday, arrested two teenagers, who alleged stole their neighbour’s motorcycle in Apomu in Isokan Local Government Area of the state.

A statement by the Amotekun Corps Commander, Retired Brig-Gen. Bashir Adewinmbi, made available to newsmen in Osogbo on Tuesday, said that the suspects later sold the stolen Bajaj motorcycle at Ogunpa in Ibadan, Oyo State, for N15,000.

“The suspects, aged 18 and 19 years old, were arrested after a complaint was lodged at Amotekun Isokan Command by the owner of the stolen motorcycle.

“Our operatives swung into action immediately and apprehended the culprit in their hideout.” he said.

6. Romance Scam: Court convicts ‘Yahoo Boy’ for impersonating US Air force officer

The Kaduna Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has secured the conviction of one AbdulBasit Abdullahi Yahaya before Justice A.A Bello of the Kaduna state High Court on a one count charge bordering on cybercrimes.

AbdulBasit who was arrested at Yoruba Road, Karji, Kaduna State, allegedly created two fictitious accounts on Instagram with the names of CamilaCosta6498 and Valentinardiaz266, which he used in defrauding victims whilst representing himself as United States Air Force officer.

The one count charge preferred against him reads, “that you, AbdulBasit Abdullahi Yahaya “M  ” on or about the 26th of April l, 2023 in Kaduna within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, impersonated one Camila Costa, an Air force Officer of the United States of America on Instagram and engaged one Rick Morrow on romantic relationship, and you thereby committed impersonation, an offence contrary to Section 142 of the Penal Code Law, 2017 of the Kaduna State and punishable under the same Law”.
