The Transmission Company of Nigeria has confirmed that a thunderstorm disrupted the 132kV Otukpo–Nsukka, New Haven transmission line on September 3, 2025, causing damage to properties and livestock along the route.

This was disclosed in a statement by TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, on Monday.

According to the company, the incident occurred near Tower 97 when the conductor snapped and fell to the ground.

Although there was no loss of human life, the high-voltage discharge torched a house, burnt a parked car, and killed two cows

2. Abia plans two new isolation centres for disease control

Abia State Government has announced plans to establish two additional isolation centres for disease control in the state.

The establishment of two additional isolation centres marks a significant step in Abia State’s efforts to strengthen its healthcare infrastructure and disease preparedness strategy.

The move comes amid heightened global attention to public health and epidemic response following the COVID-19 pandemic, which exposed gaps in isolation capacity across many Nigerian states.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday in Umuahia, the state capital, while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

3. Speaker Abbas backtracks, denies condemning Nigeria’s borrowing

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has denied reports that he condemned government borrowing.

While presenting at the West Africa Association of Public Accounts Committees conference on Monday, the Speaker expressed concerns that Nigeria’s debt had reached “a critical point” and called for urgent reforms in borrowing practices and oversight.

“As at the first quarter of 2025, Nigeria’s total public debt stood at N149.39 trillion, equivalent to about US$97 billion.

“Even more concerning is the debt-to-GDP ratio, which now stands at roughly 52 per cent, well above the statutory ceiling of 40 per cent set by our own laws.

4. Nigeria tightens security grip as agencies record major breakthroughs in August

The National Orientation Agency, NOA, has revealed that Nigeria’s security and regulatory agencies conducted major nationwide operations in August, resulting in hundreds of arrests, large-scale drug seizures, asset recoveries, and multiple convictions.

The Director-General of NOA, Lanre Issa-Onilu, disclosed the figures at the monthly joint security briefing in Abuja on Monday, describing the results as “evidence of stronger inter-agency coordination and intelligence-led actions.”

According to him, the Nigerian Army executed 261 operations nationwide, repelling attacks, dismantling insurgent cells, and rescuing abducted civilians.

He said: “In Zamfara, 30 terrorists were neutralised during air and ground strikes, while 76 militants, including women and children, surrendered to security forces. Troops also foiled an ISWAP ambush in Borno State, freeing stranded passengers.

5. Energy Transition: NEITI tasks CSOs on tracking govts, companies’ commitments

The Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) has urged civil society organisations (CSOs) to take a leading role in holding governments and companies accountable for their energy transition commitments.

Executive Secretary of NEITI, Dr. Orji Ogbonnaya Orji, made the call in Abuja during a courtesy visit to the Executive Director of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Center (CISLAC), Hon. Auwal Musa Rafsanjani.

Orji said the global shift to cleaner energy and the fiscal pressures it brings require a new agenda for civil society, one that moves beyond routine advocacy to evidence-based, solution-driven leadership that ensures no community or citizen is left behind.

“This new agenda calls for civil society to lead in energy transition accountability by developing scorecards that track government and company commitments, and by shaping community transition plans so that no one is left behind,” he said.
