The strike hit the city’s municipal building during a daily crisis management meeting on Wednesday morning.

Nabatieh’s governor, Howaida Turk, described the attack as a “massacre,” confirming the mayor’s death and reporting that 11 strikes had hit the city and its surroundings.

Emergency workers stated that the bombardment also destroyed a nearby medical facility, killing two doctors.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati accused Israel of deliberately targeting the municipal meeting.

Mikati said he “condemned the new Israeli aggression against civilians in the city of Nabatieh, which deliberately targeted a meeting of the municipal council that was discussing the city’s services and relief situation”.

Israel said the strikes on Nabatieh were aimed at “Hezbollah targets”, including “military buildings, military headquarters and munitions warehouses” that it said were “placed near civilian buildings”.

However, no evidence was presented to substantiate the claim, which has also been made in previous incidents involving significant civilian casualties.

Just days earlier, Israeli airstrikes leveled the city’s main market, leaving at least eight people injured, according to the Lebanese health ministry.
