Current United Nations data analyzed by Worldometer predicts Nigeria’s population to reach 237,527,782 by 2025, reflecting an increase from the 235,072,214 recorded in December 2024.
Eko Hot Blog gathered that between 2023 and 2024, the population of Nigeria grew by 4,796,533.

These figures coincide with US Census Bureau estimates indicating a global population growth of more than 71 million people in 2024, marking a minor slowdown compared to the 75 million increase witnessed in 2023.
According to the Worldometer report, Nigeria’s population constitutes 2.85 per cent of the world’s total, making it the sixth most populous country worldwide.
Furthermore, the report identifies Lagos (15,388,000), Kano (4,910,000), Ibadan (3,649,000), Abuja (2,690,000), and Port Harcourt (2,120,000) as Nigeria’s most populated cities.
It also states that 53.9 per cent of the population (125,447,884 people) resided in urban regions in 2024.
With a population density of 255 people per square kilometer (662 people per square mile), Nigeria occupies a land area of 910,770 square kilometers (351,650 square miles).
“The median age in Nigeria is 17.9 years while the life expectancy at birth for both sexes is 54.6 years.
“Females have a life expectancy of 54.9 years at birth while that of males is 54.3 years,” the report said.
Data indicates that the global population is projected to reach 8.09 billion on January 1, 2025.

Notably, Nigeria is among eight countries expected to contribute significantly to an increase in world population, driving it to reach 9.7 billion in 2050 and peak around 10.4 billion between the 2080s and 2100.
According to the United Nations, over half of the growth up to 2050 will be focused in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, and the United Republic of Tanzania.
