Eko Hot Blog report I n a dramatic turn of events, Olakunle Oluomo, the recently ousted Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, has vehemently rejected his impeachment, branding the entire process as “unconstitutional.”
Oluomo, who addressed the press during a briefing at the legislative quarters on Friday, asserted that he still holds the position of Speaker and has initiated legal action against the move.
During the press conference, Oluomo expressed gratitude to Governor Dapo Abiodun for his involvement in the crisis but revealed ongoing challenges with certain Assembly members who have consistently opposed his leadership during his second term.
The embattled former Speaker conveyed, “I have not been finding it easy. Some members who did not want me as Speaker have not reneged on terrorising. It has been from one problem to another.”
Emphasizing the importance of due process in choosing leadership, Oluomo criticized the impeachment process for deviating from established rules.
He outlined his surprise at receiving the notice of impeachment on Wednesday, January 24, and detailed the court’s involvement, with a hearing scheduled for February 7.
Despite interventions from Governor Abiodun and National Assembly members, Oluomo accused the 18 lawmakers behind the impeachment of remaining adamant.
He questioned their disregard for due process and constitutional norms in the leadership change.
In response to Oluomo’s removal, Oludaisi Elemide, representing Odeda State constituency, assumed the role of Speaker and assured that the new leadership would support the governor.
Elemide dismissed claims that Governor Abiodun was unaware of the impeachment, highlighting the need for calm amid the political turbulence.
Damilola Soneye, an APC lawmaker, justified Oluomo’s impeachment, citing reasons such as gross misconduct, high-handedness, lack of focus, transparency, arrogance, poor leadership style, financial misappropriation, and inciting members against each other.
Oluomo’s decision to contest his “gestapo impeachment” in court adds a legal dimension to the unfolding political saga within the Ogun State House of Assembly.
The ongoing dispute raises questions about adherence to due process and constitutional norms in the leadership transition.
