According to The Athletic, Trabzonspor have agreed to cover Onana’s full wages and are also offering performance-related bonuses that could nearly double what he previously earned at United. However, the deal does not include a loan fee or an option to make the move permanent.

Onana had arrived at United with high expectations but struggled badly with form and confidence. A series of high-profile mistakes including during Champions League and domestic cup games — saw him lose his place in Ruben Amorim’s plans.

His lowest moment came in the Carabao Cup, where he was blamed for both goals in a shocking 2-2 draw with League Two side Grimsby Town, which United eventually lost in a penalty shootout. Onana saved just one out of 13 penalties faced in the tie a moment that seemed to sum up his struggles.

Left with no permanent suitors this summer, a loan move became the only way out for the embattled goalkeeper.

United have since promoted Belgian shot-stopper Senne Lammens, 23, who joined on deadline day from Royal Antwerp for £18 million. While Lammens has been given the No.1 shirt, fans remain cautious due to United’s poor track record with recent goalkeeper signings.
