Akingboye contested the recent Ondo governorship election but lost to the incumbent governor and All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
After the poll, he and the SDP challenged the results, alleging widespread irregularities and voter intimidation. He had insisted that INEC should cancel the election due to malpractices.

Known for his integrity and generosity, Akingboye also built a successful career as a businessman and mentored many across the country. He is survived by his wives, children, grandchildren, and siblings.
The family has requested privacy during this grieving period and will announce burial arrangements at a later date.
