Residents of Oworonshoki, Berger axis of Lagos, were thrown into chaos in the early hours of saturday as government-backed demolition teams pulled down several houses, leaving many homeless and stranded.

Eko Hot Blog reports that the exercise, which began around 1p.m, caught most residents unawares.

Eyewitnesses explained that people rushed out of their homes at midnight, trying to salvage whatever belongings they could before bulldozers advanced.

Meanwhile, some residents admitted they were aware of the impending demolition, many others lamented that they were never informed of the date.

According to report, several tenants accused landlords of deliberately keeping them in the dark, even going as far as collecting renewals days before the demolition.

The atmosphere was tensed as police operatives accompanied by the demolition team, fired tear gas to disperse frustrated crowds and prevent violence resistance.

However, the operation has now been temporarily halted, authorities reportedly ordered remaining occupants to vacate within one week, raising fears of further displacement in the coming days.
