President Joe Biden has issued a presidential memorandum aimed at expanding protection of the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer and intersex people worldwide, including potentially through the use of financial sanctions.
Nigeria’s anti-gay laws have been increasingly criticized by global rights groups, which have categorized the country as overtly homophobic.
It would be recalled that the former President of Nigeria, President Goodluck Jonathan signed the prohibition of Same-Sex Marriage Act in 2014.
10 to 14 years in prison was also prescribed for cohabitation between same-sex partners, or anything that is related to it.
Nigeria, being a predominantly conservative country may not revisit its anti-gay marriage law, EKO HOT BLOG gathered.
However, Joe Biden threatened that he will take swift and meaningful responses, including financial sanctions against all countries that failed to legalize gay marriages or fail to enforce their legal protections.
He also added that any country found guilty shall not only face financial sanctions, they shall be Visa restrictions for them and other actions.
He further explained that all human beings should be treated as one. People should also be treated with respect and dignity irrespective of their genders or lifestyles. They should be able to move freely without fear, and love whoever they choose to love.
In response, some Nigerians think it is better to go with the prohibition act signed by the former President of Nigeria, and face Joe Biden financial sanction and visa restrictions.
