Senior Russian General Killed In Scooter Bomb Attack

A senior Russian general, Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, was killed on Tuesday in a bomb attack outside his apartment building in Moscow.

The bomb, hidden in a scooter, detonated as Kirillov left for his office, also killing his assistant.

The attack came a day after Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) filed criminal charges against Kirillov, accusing him of overseeing the use of banned chemical weapons in Russia’s ongoing military operation in Ukraine. An official from the SBU has claimed responsibility for the bombing.

Kirillov, 54, was the chief of Russia’s nuclear, biological, and chemical protection forces, a position he had held since 2017. He had been sanctioned by several Western nations, including the U.K. and Canada, for his involvement in Russia’s activities in Ukraine.

The SBU stated that it has documented over 4,800 incidents of chemical weapon use by Russian forces since February 2022, citing examples such as K-1 combat grenades and chloropicrin, a poison gas first used in World War I. In May, the U.S. State Department also reported instances of chloropicrin being deployed against Ukrainian troops.

Kirillov was known for his repeated accusations against Ukraine, alleging that Kyiv had used toxic agents and planned attacks involving radioactive substances — claims dismissed by Ukraine and its Western allies as baseless propaganda.

Russian officials have denied using chemical weapons in Ukraine, instead accusing Ukrainian forces of deploying toxic agents on the battlefield.

The bomb used in the attack was reportedly detonated remotely. Images from the scene revealed shattered windows and scorched brickwork near Kirillov’s apartment building.

Russia’s top investigative body has launched an inquiry into Kirillov’s death, classifying it as an act of terrorism. Moscow officials have vowed to respond and hold Ukraine accountable for the attack.
